| Dealers invest in new construction and renos - Edmonton Journal Posted: 26 Dec 2009 12:47 AM PST - - Ericksen Nissan, 10982 101st St. Ericksen Nissan has been a landmark in north downtown Edmonton for 43 years. The $2.6-million renovation project started in September 2008, as the dealership prepared to make the downtown site a Nissan-only sales and service centre and move their Infiniti line to its new stand-alone store in the West End. Renovations were completed Dec. 8. Built as a Nissan flagship-design store, the new Nissan look features floor-to-ceiling windows, special lighting, flooring and stylish decorative wood accents in the 10-car showroom. While the compact 24,000-sq.-ft. building's footprint was not enlarged, about 18,000 sq. ft. of space was renovated, increasing the number of service bays (eventually to be 14) while increasing the parts department's space efficiency (despite losing 700 sq. ft.), as well as adding a $50,000 elevator to move parts from the basement to the main level. An event to celebrate the completion of the makeover is planned for February. - - Pointe West Honda is the new name for Yellowhead Honda, which has been doing business in Edmonton since 1981. The move into this new facility -- a spectacular building at 10220 184th St-- began on Dec. 22. Pointe West will be the largest Honda Powerhouse automobile dealership in Canada, according to general manager Phil Bracegirdle. The building covers almost two acres of floor space and from inside has the architecture of an airport! The building encompasses some 84,000 sq. ft. housing Honda automobiles and a wide range of other Honda products, including motorcycles, ATVs, personal watercraft and power products. The Honda mega-store promises to push the customer experience to the limit by offering the "usual" amenities such as a 20-plus-car showroom, 32 service bays, 15-vehicle new-car delivery centre, touchless car wash, as well as a host of unusual services, including a second-floor motorcyclethemed cafe, a cafeteria on the main level, Honda car rental centre, two customer lounges (one of which is a premium lounge reserved for customers who have purchased new Honda automobiles), children's play area, Wi-Fi, computer terminals for customer use, and an on-site women's spa where facials, manicures and pedicures are only an online booking away. - - Sherwood Kia, 20 Broadway Blvd., Sherwood Park. Sherwood Kia undertook renovations to their building, which was just four years old, after Sherwood Nissan vacated the premises and moved into a new building next door. When the makeover was finished in November, some $580,000 ( "a substantial sum for a fairly new facility," says dealer principal Mark Kostick), had been spent to transform the old Nissan store into the requisite Kia corporate image. This facelift to the 15,000-sq.-ft. store has increased the dealership's capacity to sell and service cars, going from not having a new vehicle showroom to now being able to display six new cars, increasing the number of service bays from eight to 14 as well as adding an enclosed service drive-thru, two quick lube bays and an automatic car wash.
