Response to Mr. DeCanio - Pahrump Valley Times Posted: 27 Nov 2009 04:23 PM PST Nov. 27, 2009
Letters to the EditorResponse to Mr. DeCanio I understand your concerns but perhaps you did not attend the multiple meetings on the subject of the Last Chance Park. It was decided fairly early on that this park would be restricted to hikers and horses. It was also decided fairly early on that a ATV park would be looked at in the southern end of the valley. Also, there was talk of a possible park with connections to current off-road trails on the northeastern side of Route 160. Residents of the area, and I am one of them, were deeply involved with this project. You have no reason to be concerned about ATVs at Last Chance, but I do share your concern about bringing businesses into town. Home Depot, Carl's Jr. and Tommasino's Italian Restaurant are a good start but more needs to be done. The town can handle only so many auto parts stores (five that I know of) and Mexican restaurants (seven that I know of). This town needs more than just minimum wage jobs and the town board should do more to court these better- paying businesses, even if it means cutting fees to do so. TROY A. LA MANA It's your choice Tom Waters' viewpoint doesn't surprise me too much. These days, it seems to be the way more and more Americans see our political system: "If I vote for you, what do I get? What's in it for me?" Those insipid "town hall meetings" clearly illustrate the point. When did Americans slide downhill into that loser mind set? Who is Harry Reid? He's a tax-and-spend liberal, for one thing. He is a senior member of the United States Congress who stood up before the world and declared, "This war is lost," while our soldiers were still fighting a war on foreign soil and hanging their lives out on the front bumper. He is a politician who believes in big pork, such as a four-lane highway between Searchlight and Las Vegas. You never know when there will be a traffic jam heading into Searchlight, don'tcha know? He's a guy who, in his vast wisdom, thinks we should not drill in ANWR and establish energy-independence from the Middle East because you can, apparently, truck American product across the fruited plain and fly 747s with corn and windmills. And besides, Harry says, "Oil makes us sick." Quite the high-tech analytical thinker, ol' Harry. Apparently, it is not clear to some people that the pork Harry and the others bring back to their states came from our wallets in the first place and most of it is wasted on meaningless science projects. Well, I for one, don't want Harry's pork. I want Harry Reid and the rest of the tax-and-spend liberals to go away, get out of my face and my wallet and leave me alone. And when the bailed-out corporations repay the government, I want my money back. (Yeah, like that'll ever happen.) I can take care of myself, thank you, Mr. Waters, and my vote is not for sale.
