| Plasan buys industrial space for armor kits - Bennington Banner Posted: 13 Oct 2009 04:47 AM PDT NEAL P. GOSWAMI BENNINGTON -- Plasan North America has purchased another property adjacent to its Bowen Road manufacturing site to help fulfill a Pentagon contract for armored off-road vehicles. The40,000-square-foot building, which sits on about 90 acres of land at 78 Bowen Road, was purchased for $1.15 million last week, according to town records. The sale price is more than $300,000 above the property's assessed value of $821,700. "I would say they paid a fair price. It's probably something that fit their needs. It's not like buying a house where you can go out and look at six of them," said Bennington Town Clerk Timothy Corcoran. Bennington County Industrial Corp. Executive Director Peter Odierna said the Bennington area has "next to nothing" available for industrial space. PlasanVice President Dalton Blackwell said the company reviewed severaloptions before purchasing theadjoining Bowen Road site. He said Plasan is now fixing up the facility, which will serve primarily as warehouse space for the time being. The seller, Green Mountain Prestain, which stains cedar panels for residential housing, also operates a facility in Arlington under the name HBH Prestain. Plasan North America, owned by Israel-based Plasan Sasa, has seen impressive expansion lately thanks to the U.S. military's need fornewequipmentin Afghanistan. Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp. and Plasan North America were awarded a $1.05 billion Department of Defense contract in July to help produce 2,244 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain-Vehicles (M-ATV). The vehicle is a smaller, more agile version of a vehicle being used in Iraq by U.S. forces. The Pentagon then approved a second contract to build an additional 1,700 M-ATVs for an additional $1.06 billion earlier this year. A third, smaller contract, for an additional 352 vehicles, followed. Plasan announced last week that it has completed and delivered the first 750 armor kits. The contracts have created at least 100 jobs at Plasan and with area subcontractors, according to company officials. It has also required the company to secure more space to help meet the demands of the M-ATV contracts. Plasan Sasa also owns Plasan Carbon Composites in Bennington, which produces lightweight auto parts. That subsidiary recently opened a new research and development site apart from its manufacture site at the Maneely Business Park at Shields Drive. Contact Neal P.
