Monitoring Devices Remind Teens to Buckle Up - PR Inside

When most people get in the car the logical response is to start the engine and put on their safety belt; however many teens are not using that logic and are forgetting to buckle up according to a study done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In fact, almost half of 16- and 17-year-old drivers killed in crashes

– roughly 2,500 teens – in 2007 were unbelted.

Monitoring devices could help encourage teens to take this important step, the researchers found.

While 94 percent of teens involved in the study used safety belts already, the remaining teens buckled up when the monitoring devices continued to buzz or make other sounds. Similar results were found by the researchers in 2006 among drivers of all ages using belt reminders that chime or buzz.

IIHS says that the reminders are a necessary tool in reminding all drivers, not only teens, to buckle up. The noises encourage drivers to comply with safety belt laws and give an incentive since fastening a seat belt is the quickest way to make the noise stop.

For the past 23 years, GEICO has held a national art and design contest for students to get across the message that seat belts save lives. The next GEICO competition kicks off Sept. 1. Through traditional poster art, graphic design and video submissions, students are encouraged to creatively show the importance of how safety belts save lives. Black Book Sees Increased Activity, Upward Movement in Used Market - Auto Remarketing

Posted: 31 Aug 2009 01:09 PM PDT

By Joe Overby, Staff Writer
August 31, 2009

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — With Cash for Clunkers wrapping up and consumers' attention turning back to the used-car market, Black Book's Ricky Beggs said there was a significant upswing in the number of daily used-vehicle value adjustments, and most of the movement was positive.

"The clunkers turned junkers are all now parked on the back lots, side lots and in some cases on the main lot, waiting for the cash to arrive back at the dealership," he noted during the "Beggs on the Used Car Market" video report.

"New-car inventory is almost nonexistent, mirroring the customer traffic at the franchised dealers' lots this past week," Beggs continued. "Now the focus and consumer interest is all turned back toward the used-car market."

According to Beggs, there was an average of 1,516 daily adjustments each day last week, compared with 332 per day during the prior period.

Ten of the 14 truck segments that Black Book monitors showed increases in values, while six of the 10 car segments moved upward.

"One thing the editors noticed during their analysis and while attending auctions was the strength in the extra clean- and clean-condition units as compared to the average- and rough-condition models," Beggs pointed out.

More specifically, more than half of the adjusted clean-condition vehicles (53 percent) showed an average increase of $180. Meanwhile, among average-condition units, 52 percent of the adjustments were negative, at an average decrease of almost $117.

Beggs added that "the market was in a positive mode overall with the daily movement up almost $41 for clean-condition (vehicles), while being up only $17 for the average-condition models."

Moving on, Beggs also discussed the week's trends in the specialty markets.

"The medium- and heavy-duty truck and commercial trailer market has also been affected by the weak economy," he explained.

"The current solid supply has caused all but the cleanest, lowest mileage units to fall in retained value," Beggs noted. "These products are not impulse buys and the floor plan requirements are making buyers be more selective."

One of the specialty markets that Beggs said has been "exciting" as of late has been the powersports market, which includes motorcycles, ATV, side-by-side utilities, personal watercraft and snowmobiles.

"It is the time of the year in most parts of the country where the motorcycle and personal watercraft portion is facing the normal seasonal decline in values," Beggs commented. "However, a growing and extremely hot segment includes the larger ATVs and the side-by-sides.

"Hunting season and the work functionality of the side-by-sides may be the drivers here in the market values. The big touring, fully dressed cruisers are the surprise in today's market," he continued. "There is an unusual softening in demand and prices at the auctions across the country for this segment of the market heading into September."

Note to illegal ATV riders: Sprague is ready for you - Record-Journal

Posted: 27 Aug 2009 04:56 PM PDT

In response to complaints about illegal all-terrain vehicle riding, Sprague's resident trooper, John Patterson, said he is fighting back.

A new ATV, complete with lights, sirens and skull graphics, will allow Patterson to traverse areas once inaccessible to his patrol car.

"We've talked about this for about three years," Patterson said. "There are groups riding on town property illegally."

The ATV and accessories were purchased through a $9,100 federal Justice Assistance grant awarded to the town. The money also will pay for training through the Department of Environmental Protection, which holds two classes a year for law enforcement personnel.

State DEP spokesman Dennis Schain said it is illegal to ride on state-owned land, and anyone on private property must have written permission and carry that permission while riding.

"We enforce those laws and work closely with the state police," Schain said. "(ATVs) can do a tremendous about of damage to natural resources — vegetation and land."

Schain said DEP conservation officers occasionally coordinate with state police, who use a helicopter to relay information to police on the ground, in efforts to locate ATV riders on state land.

ATV riders also are a problem on town-owned land, such as the the 300-acre Mukluk property and 250-acre town reservoir, Patterson said.

Patterson said he plans to join in some DEP stings and nab illegal riders.

Pautipaug Hill Road homeowner Richard Weir said he is somewhat skeptical of the idea, but applauds the effort.

"I don't think it's a bad thing he has this vehicle to access trails and unimproved roads," Weir said. "But to justify it by saying you're nabbing marauding groups of ATV riders from out of town?"

The ATV was purchased from Advanced Automotive in Griswold.

Suzuki at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show - The Auto Chanel

Posted: 29 Aug 2009 04:54 PM PDT

Suzuki presents its revamped SX4 at the 63rd Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA). Attention will also focus on a special Swift model, the successful Alto and Splash, and other innovations. Small cars have always been a priority at Suzuki – a model strategy that has taken the carmaker along a path of success in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. This small car expertise is the central theme of Suzuki's presentation in hall 3.1, stand A03.

The SX4 created a new niche crossover that is the perfect size for the downsizing world. With an updated look and a fine-tuned engine line up Suzuki's urban warrior, the revised SX4, leads the charge for the Japanese company. This 'king' of the urban jungle and rough terrain comes with four engines, including one new diesel engine, reduced CO2 emissions and lower fuel consumption. A Euro5 emissions compliant engine line-up, a new look and intelligent all-wheel-drive keep the small crossover with big car attitude and small car emissions fresh and at the front.

The all-conquering Swift has come in for an upgrade, with a special edition gaining a raft of enhanced features. Outside, notable additions include side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a chromed front grille for the petrol models, fog lamps, and a muffler extension. Inside, race-bred Alcantara seats, silver speaker bezels, new door trims and other features provide even greater value for money and give the Swift a winning edge. The Swift special edition, limited to the German market, includes special "limited" stitched floor mats and exterior "Limited 25" badges.

The Alto celebrates 30 years at the top of its game with a massive 10 million sales and a new model line. The darling of the small car world and the smallest world strategic model in Suzuki's line-up now comes with eye catching style, affordability, fuel consumption figures of just 4.4l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 103g/km. Splash, the stylish five-door mini MPV, remains an economical and roomy compact car aimed at urban families and young couples, and meets all the demands of modern city living.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Suzuki founder's first step into business. In a market that demands cost-effective, environmentally conscious cars, Suzuki has thrived, and the Frankfurt Motor Show should form the springboard for even greater success. The Frankfurt International Motor Show is open to the public from 17 to 27 September 2009. Press days are scheduled on 15 and 16 September.
